Diving into Statistics

A year back, I was browsing through Reddit and someone posted a link in /r/dataisbeautiful. I don’t remember exactly what the article was about but it was from a site named 538. As an avid reader I started looking for other posts on the site, read a few of those and was pretty much amazed by the analysis. The data analysis fascinated me and I started researching about it. After a couple of days researching I understood the power of data analysis. The geek in me got impatient to be one of those guys who can do cool stuffs with data. Henceforth, I took my first steps of the journey of becoming an awesome data scientist.

In my pursuit of becoming a data scientist I have learned lots of concepts and learning a lot of new stuffs everyday. When you do stuffs that is out of your comfort zone it makes you pretty smart. Some days are pretty tough as it can get overwhelming and you might find yourself slacking off resulting in stress and frustration. But you gotta bounce back. I’ve made one of the days of the week as a ‘chill out day’. Come home from work and, spend time with family and video games. Wednesdays are generally chill out days for me. The rest of the days I like to work.

Anyway, after acquainting myself with Data Science I came to know one need needs to have a strong Math and Stats skills set. I have always been a Math geek and this is a good news to me. Doing Math again, wohoo! So, after much thinking and researching I planned on taking up ‘Think Stats’ by Allen B Downey. You can find his website here Think Stats A.Downey. The reason I picked up Statistics right now is because I’m taking this course on edx called ‘Analytics Edge’ by MITx. It requires you to know a good amount of statistics and math coupled with R. Once I finish reading ‘Think Stats’ I’m going to pick up ‘Statistical Learning’ by Stanford. From my understanding, these two courses should be enough to have a solid grasp on Statistics.
